Preserving and promoting Australia’s collective memory
Located throughout Australia, the National Archives of Australia is entrusted to preserve Australia’s most valuable government records, and encourage their use by the public. When DJAS was awarded the project in 2018, we understood the importance of public engagement to the agency.
A generous gallery space defines the entrance for staff and visitors alike. This large ‘front door’ provides a new public interface, enabling the NAA to host events and exhibitions throughout the year. A public research centre uses the existing courtyard to full effect, creating a strong visual link between to the gallery and street.
Within the office spaces, the agencies role as guardians of Australian cultural identity is reinforced throughout, including large graphic walls which reflect the local and national history of the area.
