The Defence Network Operations Centre (DNOC) at HMAS Harman in Canberra co-locates a number of previously separate information-based arms of Australia’s Defence Force. Under the new roof, the DNOC team operates Australia’s fourth largest telecommunications network 24/7.
The striking form of the building is defined by the distinctive roof which also forms the southern facade. The roof, equivalent in area to a hockey field, extends 80m along its east/west axis and pitches at 3 degrees along its minor axis. The large eaves and single gutter form both an expressive and functional feature, protecting the glazed northern elevation. The building shell, although simple in plan, form and construction material, is a striking example of a contemporary intelligent building.
