Incorporated into the design of the Canberra Centre extension is the appreciation of Walter Burley Griffins original plan to retain the axis that lies between City Hill and Mt Ainslie. This has been achieved by creating an upper arcade running along this axis (Ainslie Ave) that presents views of Mount Ainslie through a steel rammed glass facade. The design of the lower level enhances the link, by featuring a covered pedestrian street that opens out to landscaped forecourts. The clever and extensive use of natural light, along with the refurbishment of the existing centre creates a vibrant and refreshing facelift. The forty new retail outlets and the 24hr open streetscape offers a substantial injection of activity for the City area.
