The new Performing Arts building at the Belconnen Arts Centre is an expansion of their current facilities, which were originally only designed for visual artistic endeavors and amateur dance capabilities.
The building is designed for an extended building life with careful selection of materials and finishes to minimize maintenance and to work within the rigours of high public usage, both day and night. The DJAS design provided, consolidated and elevated a true identity for an important building on a prominent site and allowed the differing façades to go beyond the scope of being mere ‘skins’ and offer artistic expression through their connection and articulation. The building provides an open permeability through the greater spaces to the lake itself. The BAC houses various artistic endeavours and is also an inviting conduit to the foreshore by functioning theatrically in its own built form – as such a building should.
