The project developed from the desire of the Department of Finance to utilise the disused communication centre adjacent to the John Gorton building. In 2001 DJAS developed the design concept for the proposed underground facility, which met the need for A-Grade office accommodation and the national capital authority requirements for new buildings within the parliamentary triangle. The design is subtle and relates empathetically with the John Gorton building. It incorporates a number of skylights and courtyards to provide light into the spaces below. These have been developed as elegant elements that are complementary to the John Gorton building and its new light shafts, added in the recent (1998) refurbishment.
