The new building provides a functional and flexible laboratory facility for the purpose of conducting state-of-the-art laser and plasma experiments and research. The project also involved the refurbishment of the Cockcroft Building to accommodate both the student and administrative section in a contemporary office environment.

The building form is both a response to the site conditions and the unique requirements of the building users. The development provides a stable environment, minimising vibration, temperature variations and electromagnetic interference while allowing for a flexibility to suit the needs of changing experimental equipment.
