The AIS Sports Visitor Centre provides a new ‘front door’ for visitors to the Australian Institute of Sport, as well as a new entry to the AIS indoor arena. The building’s siting and massing were developed in response to the existing adjacent buildings, and the client’s desire to provide a distinguishable public building that stands out as a focal point for tourists visiting the AIS Campus. The form is a logical response to the complex requirements of the project brief and to the adjacent buildings, and provides a fourth closing piece to a plaza at the heart of the AIS. The expression is extremely simple, but through skill and assuredness of design the visitor centre establishes its own clear presence without overwhelming or detracting from its three neighbours.
