Who we are

Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn (DJAS) is a leading Canberra design practice and is part of a national design group with offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra.

DJAS was established by Daryl Jackson and Alastair Swayn in the 1980’s, and we have been integral to the development of Canberra’s urban footprint with projects such as the design of Brindabella Business Park and Majura precinct. During that time we have gained a reputation for high quality design based architecture due to our ability to synthesise the conflicting demands of creativity, planning, collaboration, cost effectiveness, and quality design.

As an interdisciplinary design practice of professional architects, urban, and interior designers, we work collaboratively with our clients. Our extensive and diverse portfolio demonstrates our experience and skill set within an impressive range of design services.

What we are good at

Good architecture fulfils functional necessities but also expresses place, community, and the era in which it is built. To move forward, new vision is needed about how to improve the built environment for the people who interact with it. Our architecture contributes to the creation of better places and cities for the present and for the future.

Design is a technical as well as an artistic endeavour, and we consider and discuss a broad range of topics with our clients. Topics can range across the functionality of space, acoustic privacy, and all the small details that make a space work.

Our portfolio demonstrates our ability to work at a variety of project sizes from 45sqm to 85,000sqm and beyond with each design being well informed by a foundation of research.

We stay abreast of all current trends and leaders in the market through the active pursuit of knowledge and networking. For example, DJAS co-authored the Flexible Efficient Workplace Design Guidance document for the Department of Finance in 2012.
